Black History Month 2012 & Old Dominion University

The following Black History Month events are all hosted on ODU's campus.

• 06 Keynote Address by Ruby Bridges

• 07 International Café: Hot Buttons - The African Diaspora of BRAZIL
12:30pm-2pm, Intercultural Center, Webb 2114 | Office of Intercultural Relations and Monarch Dining
Brazil is often viewed as an "anything goes" cultural environment, however, there are multiple types of cultural and legal prohibitions that don't exist in the US. This talk will illustrate a particular case of a clash of interests (religion, gender, class, race) resulting from a law proposed concerning Pagode music. Presenter: Dr. Samuel Coppage, Department of Information Technology

• 08 Dance with African Caribbean Association (ACA)
7:30pm-2pm, North Café, Webb Center | African Caribbean Association
Come, learn dances from Mapuka to Alanta.

• 09 | 10 Tunnel of Oppression
7:00pm-10:00pm, Webb Center | Office Housing & Residence Life
Raising awareness and educating the campus community about systematic oppression that occurs in our society every day. Participants are led through a series of scenarios focusing on various topics, including but not limited to racism, socioeconomic inequality, body image issues, homophobia, and campus violence.

• 09 The History of the N-word
6:00pm-8:00pm, MGB 102 | Black Student Caucus
Documentary entitled, "The N-word", surrounding the evolution of the N-word in America, and features stars such as Whoopi Goldberg, Nia Long and Talib Kweli will be presented. A discussion moderated by Dr. Timothy Robinson will follow.

• 10 HIV Testing Event
11am-4pm, Hampton/Newport News Rooms, Webb Center | Student Health Services
This event is in recognition of National Black HIV Testing Day, February 7.

• 13 Social Dynamics between Africans & African Americans
7pm-9pm, North Café, Webb Center | African Caribbean Association, Black Alumni Council, Minds About Progress and the Office of Intercultural Relations
Open dialogue on the perceptions, misconception and myths held by Africans of African Americans contrasted by those held by African Americans of Africans. A short film featuring interviews on campus will lead into a constructive and unifying discussion on common experiences and interests. Moderator: Dr. Kideste Wilder-Bonner, Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice

• 17 Brother II Sister
6pm-9pm, Chesapeake Room, Webb Center
Panel discussion on the topic of relationships and love from a wide variety of perspectives.

• 18 Legacy of Hope Prayer Luncheon
Noon, Rector's Room, Webb Center | Sword of the Spirit
Event to raise funds and collect goods for food banks in the Hampton Roads area. Admission is a canned good. Monetary donations are welcome.

• 20 The State of The African American Woman
8PM, Hampton/Newport News Rooms, Webb Center | Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc
Discussion of issues pertaining to African American women. The women on the panel will be collegiate women, faculty members, and representatives from the community. After the panel discussion, there will be a brief Q&A session.

• 21 International Café: The African Diaspora of ENGLAND
12:30pm-2pm, Intercultural Center, Webb 2114
This talk chronicles the extent to which black newcomers are/were welcomed in England, their struggles to balance work, studies, and family responsibilities both in their homes of origin and in England, their fight against racial abuse; and through it all, the robust role they now occupy in English social, and economic history. Presenter: Dr. Victoria Time, Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice

Lecture by Juwanza Kunjufu, educational consultant, mentor, author, lecturer.

• 23 Open hair Forum
6:30pm, MGB 102 | D.E.S.T.I.N.E.D
We will be inviting 3 different hair stylists to discuss a variety of hair techniques: A master hair stylist, a natural hair stylist, and a stylist for weaves and braids. Audience members will be able to ask the stylists questions as well as a panel of students with different hair styles and textures.

• 24 Sister 4 Sister: I Am Woman…Unveiled…
6pm-9pm, River Rooms, Webb Center
Topics for discussion: include Self-Esteem and Body Image, Slavery: What did Black Women endure?, and The Respect Issue of Black Women. Facilitators: Dr. Althea Tate, Department of Women's' Studies Dr. Tim Robinson, Department of English Lesa Clark, Office of Intercultural Relations
