Virginia Beach, Virginia Male Mentorship Program

Interested in enrolling your son / male child in The Golden Fold ?
Interested in becoming a community mentor for The Golden Fold ?

We open our doors for the 2012-2013 program year (Golden Year) on 10/13/2012 at 10:00 am with our Annual Kick-Off !. At that time we will have an On Boarding session and take in new Young Leader participants. If you wish to enroll then attend the Kick Off, complete the application, and all applicants will be considered and approvals for participation will be provided within seven days of the application submission. We regret that we are limited to the participation of 20 Young Leaders:

The Golden Fold is a Joint Mentoring venture involving Gamma Xi Ques, The S.A.A.B. Program of T.C.C., and The Man-Up Connection (Men in the community who become involved). The Golden Fold serves youth in grades 6 through 12 by providing a (currently) Free Leadership Development program with a S.T.R.EA.M. Curriculum. The young men that are participants in The Golden Fold are called "Young Leaders" or YL.

The term 'Golden Fold' represents a valued (Golden) brotherhood (fold). Gamma Xi will provide over-sight mentors from their chapter to support the activities. The S.A.A.B. Are the direct mentors provide direct community mentors, marketing activities, and programming and administration support, The Man-Up Connection will provide business and political connections to support the activities of the movement.

Our movement follows a Leadership S.T.R.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Attendance, Mathematics). During our sessions the Young Leaders (mentees) will be exposed to presentations and experiences that focus upon Science, Technology, and Engineering. Upon entry will test each YL in the areas of reading and math. If it is found that they have a deficiency in either of these areas we will refer them to receive tutoring from an organization we are affiliated with. We will also monitor their Attendance via their school's guidance department. One of our Program staff will provide interventions to provide support to the YL to improve their attendance if needed.

Our Model
The Golden Fold meets the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and will normally follow our Bond/Guide/Build model:
10:00 – 10:30 Arrival, Bonding, YLs and Mentors meet and interact socially
10:30 – 11:15 Guidance given by one or two presentations based on the S.T.R.E.A.M. Curriculum or   Leadership Lamplights
11:15 – 11:55 Building group activities and or group discussions led by staff based upon presentations
11:55 Announcements and Dismissal

Our mentors are not assigned specifically to any YL. Over a series of sessions each YLs should have an opportunity to interact with most of the mentors, providing an opportunity for a YL to develop friendship with preferred mentors. They will have an opportunity to interact with their preferred mentors during the bonding period which is normally a part of a session.

Interactions with YLs during the bonding period will only occur in the presence and with the guidance of other mentors. Interactions between our mentors and YLs outside of our activities is not necessarily encouraged, nor is it the intent of the program. The Golden Fold mentors are instructed to avoid creating or facilitating intentional out-of-program meetings with the YLs. Mentors will not be permitted to transport or to take possession/charge/custody of YLs in the program with the exception of our community escorts who escort the Yls from the targeted neighborhoods as scheduled.

Black Star Media Group Announces

Newly Re-Released eBook from the Conscious Rasta Keidi Awadu
Chef Keidi
Los Angeles, California - Sept. 19, 2012 - Why are we witnessing a new wave of racial provocation and conflict within America?  What is behind this sudden upsurge in ethnic intolerance, polarization, hostility and even violence?  Is there any way that we can move beyond this conflict and establish a new set of relationships within the larger culture?

Within this re-published edition of the popular Conscious Rasta Report, research author Keidi Awadu shows that there is an alternative way of viewing relations between different ethnic groups, pointing out so many points of commonality as well as giving fresh perspective to those distinctions which do exist.  For anyone who has grown tired of the same old rhetoric producing the same old outcome, here is a chance to truly Move Beyond Race-Ism into a new way of using culture to its full potential.

MOVING BEYOND RACE-ISM: New Strategies for a New Millennium eBook
This edition of the Conscious Rasta Report advanced the idea that "race-ism" is a doctrine that is failing the individual, community, nation and planet to advance to the greater potential of a world liberated from manipulation.

We examine 1) The Race Card; 2) what is culture?; 3) the differnce between Western and African civilizations; 4) Rastafarianism as a transforming cultural model; and our 7MAC plan to create a new and dynamic youth culture.
This book moves away from seeing the world from the perspective of a perpetual victim and puts power firmly in the hands of those who understand just how culture shapes individual and group behavior.  If you are tired of race-based manipulation from all points of identification, then this book can free you to think in a new paradigm. eBook CRP V4N2 $7.95

Black Job Seekers: No college degree required for these $100,000 jobs

No college degree required for these $100,000 jobs

Ete Sen (What's Up) G&G Readers,

Very interested article here.  College isn't for everyone, and the pay can be better.  Click on the link below that was in USA today a couple weeks ago.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/employment/story/2012-09-02/cnbc-getting-jobs-with-no-college-degree/57377102/1

It may not be a piece of cake, but despite stagnant wages for the majority of U.S. workers, making a six-figure salary without earning a college degree can be achieved.

Enlargeed Saxon, AP file
Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif.Sponsored LFrom overseeing the creation of beautiful breads, pastries and desserts for hotels and restaurants as an executive pastry chef to (surprisingly!) becoming a nuclear power reactor operator, conducting procedures that start up or shut down the plant, having a college degree in these occupations is not mandatory.Personal trainers, massage therapists, and handymen are also among the jobs where top earners with no college degree can receive annual pay that exceeds $100,000, according to PayScale.com. To compile this list, PayScale.com surveyed its salary and career database, covering about 12,000 jobs in over 1,000 industries.

"A six-figure salary is not typical in these jobs, but it is possible," says PayScale.com's Katie Bardaro. "You need to be a top performer in your field to earn these salaries."

Yet even average salaries in these jobs are higher than salaries for most workers who only have a high school diploma. The median earnings for a high-school graduate, age 25 or older, were $28,070 in 2011, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

PayScale.com found executive pastry chefs, handymen, licensed massage therapists, personal trainers, and nuclear power operators could earn median annual salaries of $45,100 to $103,000 a year. The annual pay could potentially rise much higher.

Among nuclear power reactor operators, personal trainers, and licensed massage therapists, top earners commanded salaries of over $140,000 a year!

Only the top 10% of workers on the PayScale.com list holding only a high school diploma or GED will earn over $100,000, Bardaro says. And workers with a high school diploma tend to earn more than those with only a GED, when other factors are held constant.

Continuing education courses, as well as years of experience, also may be required for licenses or certifications to garner the highest salaries in many these fields. But those requirements can often be attained at a vocational school or community college at far less of a cost than attending a four-year college or university.
Recent high school graduates certainly won't go from turning their tassels in June to making $141,000 a year switching on and off equipment at a nuclear power plant in September. For nuclear power reactor operators, "from a strict perspective, you can do this job with a high school diploma, but it does require a lot of specialized training," says Scott Burrell, a spokesperson for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which administers the examinations required for operators' licensing.

ScienceBuddies.org, a non-profit web site that encourages students and parents to learn more about careers in the sciences, makes sure young people know how long it can take to reach that goal. Before even beginning training, a nuclear power plant worker must have 3 years of power plant experience. At least 6 months of this must be on site at the nuclear power plant where the operator is to be licensed, and training generally takes at least one year before the worker takes the NRC-administered exam.

Training standards and requirements for massage therapists vary greatly by state and locality. Education programs for this job, at a private or public post-secondary institution, can require 500 hours or more of study to complete, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and a high school diploma or equivalent degree is usually required for admission.

A certified executive pastry chef must complete 150 hours of continuing education courses, as well as courses in nutrition, food safety and sanitation and pass a written and practical exam, according to the American Culinary Federation. Plus, to be certified, they must have worked for 3 years as a pastry chef in charge of food production in a food service operation and have supervised at least three full-time works in food preparation.
So getting a $100,000 job with no degree may not be as easy as pie, but for budding bakers, young scientists, and many other high school graduates the potential to earn six-figure salaries after some training may be much more than just icing on the cake.

We have Pelo "Africano" ! Not "Pelo Malo" !

Published on Jun 13, 2012 by
The implications and dynamics of 'pelo malo' or bad hair and good hair are examined by women and men from all over the Americas and Africa. What do these terms mean? How are they interpreted and ultimately what attitudes do they reflect? Like the series: http://facebook.com/negrodocu Support the series, http://www.indiegogo.com/negrodocu

Pelo Bueno, Pelo Malo and the First Meltingpot Giveaway

So, on our way home from the holidays, my husband struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler who happened to be from Venezuela. My husband swears he cannot remember how the conversation started but eventually the topic turned to hair. Maybe she was looking at my hair, beautiful as it is in shoulder length dredlocks. Or perchance she was fascinated by the different textures of hair on the heads of my two children. Whatever the reason, the terms "pelo bueno" and "pelo mala," entered the discussion.

"Do you know what we mean in Venezuela when we say 'pelo malo,' the woman whispered to my Spaniard. "Pelo malo is hair that is so kinky that it doesn't even get wet. Water just ripples off of it." And she wasn't speaking metaphorically. She meant that in a technical way, that indeed there is a certain grade of (obviously African) hair that is so dense that water cannot penetrate.

She then reached over to pat my older son's head, to ascertain just what type of hair he had. The Spaniard claims my son was blissfully unaware of the conversation going on around him. She proclaimed, "Oh no, his hair isn't 'malo,' it's thick but water could still get through." Really, she said that.

Had I known what was being discussed, I definitely would have jumped into the conversation, but apparently I was too busy drooling in my own seat across the aisle. As it turns out, there are several grades of hair between 'pelo bueno' and 'pelo malo,' where the 'bueno' hair is nice and straight like that of the European conquistadors who introduced it to the Venezuelan double helix. (See image above for visual aide.)

I am so not criticizing this woman, just posting about here on the Meltingpot for public debate and discussion. Anybody who knows anything about Black Americans and our hair knows that as a community we're still employing the terms, 'good hair' and 'bad hair,' where bad hair is ultra kinky and good hair is loose and curly and kind of Indian looking. Right? I just think this story illustrates how similar we all are, despite our desperate and futile attempts to segregate ourselves. Can I get a witness? I feel like I'm about to preach a sermon, but I will refrain from spreading the hairy gospel.
