Black Republican Candidate Herman Cain's "Dear Skeptics and Critics"

Dear skeptics and critics
By Herman Cain
May 30, 2011

Wow! I must be causing some people quite a concern as a candidate for the Republican nomination for president. The establishment skeptics are still stuck in the traditional campaign paradigm of immediate name ID, lots of money, and having held a worthy elective office before. The critics are pounding on what they perceive as my weaknesses. And the Democratic National Committee now has me on its radar and is sharpening its blades for a Cain attack.

No one is more emblematic of the Republican establishment than Karl Rove. He has an unmatched political record from his tenure with former president George W. Bush. I greatly respect and admire what he has accomplished in his career.

But I would suggest that he take a few minutes to review my record as a leader in business and as a problem-solver before he dismisses me as the radio talk show guy form Atlanta with not much to offer as a presidential candidate. Mr. Rove's perspective also suggests that successful business skills are not applicable to changing the "Titanic" course our federal government is on.

People outside the political establishment are starting to recognize that those business skills are applicable. Maybe that's why Cain is rising in the polls.

One of my favorite political commentators, Charles Krauthammer of Fox News, described my candidacy as entertainment. I enjoy his perspectives because he is usually very thoughtful and often correct in his analysis. Unfortunately, this time he got it wrong. Some people would describe being able to give an informative and inspiring speech as an asset, especially if one is running for president.

Or maybe Mr. Krauthammer was thinking of the announcement rally we held in Atlanta recently, which attracted over 15,000 enthusiastic supporters. Then again, maybe it's because we do not have the funds or the fundraising network that the more well-known candidates have. And no, my campaign is not broke, as someone on Chris Wallace's Fox News staff incorrectly concluded from a dormant PAC account.

My presidential campaign account is called Friends of Herman Cain, just in case Mr. Rove, Mr. Krauthammer and Mr. Wallace would like to make a contribution. I'm not mad! We just have temporary differences of opinions.

And to my critics who are scouting for more of my weaknesses to write about, I will give you three you have not discovered yet. I don't know everything. I don't pander to groups.  And I am terrible at political correctness. Like any candidate, I will make some gaffes and stumble in some interviews with the press.

On the other hand, my strengths include identifying problems, properly framing problems, solving problems, surrounding myself with good and great people, and giving those overly inspiring speeches to engage the people in my common sense solutions process. Oh! I also like to smile, laugh and have fun with people. I think people can handle those qualities in a presidential candidate.

Lastly, I'm surprised that the DNC already has me on its political radar screen when not all of the potential candidates have yet to even formally declare their candidacy for the Republican nomination. Maybe the Democrats are taking my candidacy seriously, and if I win the nomination then they will not be laughing.

I realize that the road to the nomination and the White House is long and difficult. I know we will encounter many new challenges along the way, and that many people see my chances as against the odds.

When one considers that I am up against the skeptics, the critics, the establishment, the Democrats, the liberals, gotcha journalism, a liberal-leaning mainstream media, the challenges of raising campaign funds and a host of other candidates seeking the same objectives, my candidacy is against the odds.

But then, that's been the story of my life and my career.

Maybe my middle name should have been David. He defeated a giant against the odds.

Who INVENTED THE CELL PHONE? (Answer inside)

Ever wonder who invented the Cell Phone?
And the answer is -The son of Jackson State University Administrator, Henry T. Sampson, Sr.

OK, you are on a TV game show and have to answer this question to win $10M. The question is, who invented the cellular phone? In all probability most of us could not answer this question. Those of you who know are in that small minority.

The inventor of the Cellular phone is Henry Sampson, Jr. Sampson is an African-American from Jackson, Mississippi. He attended Morehouse and transferred to Purdue. He received an MS in Engineering from the University of California (Go Bears). He was awarded an MS in Nuclear Engineering from Illinois and his Ph.D. from Illinois. Sampson is the first African-American to receive a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering.

In 1971 Sampson was awarded a patent for the "gamma-electric cell." This technology was used in the cellular phone. Hopefully Dr. Sampson was well rewarded for his efforts.

All right, now that you have this information join the "Tell a Brother Club" by passing this information on to more of us.(Barbershops and Beauty Salons are great places to discuss this info).
During the week let our Anglo brethren know about Dr. Sampson. This is called the "Breakdown the stereotype campaign."

Henry Thomas Sampson, Jr. (born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1934) is an American inventor.
He graduated from high school in 1951 from Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi. He then attended Morehouse College for a couple of years before transferring to Purdue University. He received a Bachelor's degree in science from Purdue University in 1956. He graduated with an MS degree in engineering from the University of California in 1961. Sampson also received his MS in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1965, and his PhD in 1967.
He is the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering in the United States. Some of his accomplishments include being a member of theUnited States Navy between the years 1962 and 1964 and earning an Atomic Energy Commission honor between 1964 and 1967. Later he was awarded the Black Image Award from Aerospace Corporation in 1982. He was awarded the Blacks in Engineering, Applied Science Award, and prize for education, by the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers in 1983. In June 2007, Sampson was married to Laura Howzell Young in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Young-Sampson is a professor in the College of Education at California State University San Bernardino.

Inventor

Sampson was employed as a research chemical engineer at the U.S. Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, California, in the area of high energy solid propellants and case bonding materials for solid rocket motors. Sampson also served as the Director of Mission Development and Operations of the Space Test Program at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California.
His patents included a binder system for propellants and explosives and a case bonding system for cast composite propellants. Both inventions are related to solid rocket motors. He received a patent, with George H. Miley, for a gamma-electrical cell on July 6, 1971.
On July 6, 1971, Sampson was awarded a patent for the "gamma-electric cell". The gamma-electric cell is a device that produces a high voltagefrom radiation sources, primarily gamma radiation, with proposed goals of generating auxiliary power from the shielding of a nuclear reactor. Additionally, the patent cites the cell's function as a detector with self power and construction cost advantages over previous detectors.[1]

NYTimes.com: What the History of Memorial Day Teaches About Honoring the...

Piggybacking on this story is also the unknown or "forgotten" story that the Statue of Liberty sitting in NY Harbor is NOT the original one that was created by French Sculptor Bartholdi to commemorate our Ancestors who fought in the Civil War in the Union Army to free themselves from enslavement.  Of course, the original statue, below, never saw the light of day due to the same forces that have co-opted the original Memorial Day begun by our Ancestors after they had won their freedom the old fashioned way--fighting for it.  The image below of the original Lady Liberty shows her holding the broken chains of enslavement in her left hand, with the remaining broken chains at her feet. The broken chains were a metaphor the sculptor used to symbolize  the breaking of the literal chains of enslavement that our Ancestors were fettered with on their hands, necks and feet.  This image, and its history is more fully described in my essay, "Juneteenth Is Mis-Guided!"

Editorial Observer:  What the History of Memorial Day Teaches About Honoring the War Dead
By ADAM COHEN
Memorial Day is a day not only of remembering, but also of selective forgetting - a point to keep in mind as the Iraq war moves uneasily into the history books.

Memorial Day started by Blacks in America

A celebration and burial of dead soldiers held by African-Americans on May 1, 1865 on a South Carolina burial ground was the first recorded Memorial Day, according to Yale University history professor David Blight. Blight says many Union soldiers were buried improperly in a burial ground that once was a race track. After the Civil War ended, many blacks returned to the grounds to give the fallen soldiers proper burials. “Blacks, many of them recently freed slaves, buried the soldiers properly. They put up a fence around the area and painted it. More than 260 were buried there. We don’t know the names. We don’t know the race,” Blight told BlackAmericaWeb.com.

African Americans Invented Memorial Day
Posted by JOE WINDISH, Technology Editor in Society, War
Click here for the original article

According to Professor David Blight of the Yale University History Department, the first memorial day was observed by formerly enslaved black people at the Washington Race Course (today the location of Hampton Park) in Charleston, South Carolina. The race course had been used as a temporary Confederate prison camp in 1865 as well as a mass grave for Union soldiers who died there. Immediately after the cessation of hostilities, formerly enslaved people exhumed the bodies from the mass grave and reinterred them properly with individual graves. They built a fence around the graveyard with an entry arch and declared it a Union graveyard. The work was completed in only ten days. On May 1, 1865, the Charleston newspaper reported that a crowd of up to ten thousand, mainly black residents, including 2800 children, proceeded to the location for included sermons, singing, and a picnic on the grounds, thereby creating the first "Decoration Day".

David W. Blight in his own words from The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877, lecture 19, To Appomattox and Beyond: The End of the War and a Search for Meanings:

African-Americans invented Memorial Day, in Charleston, South Carolina. There are three or four cities in the United States, North and South, that claim to be the site of the first Memorial Day, but they all claim 1866; they were too late. I had the great, blind, good fortune to discover this story in a messy, totally disorganized collection of veterans’ papers at the Houghton Library at Harvard some years back. And what you have there is black Americans, recently freed from slavery, announcing to the world, with their flowers and their feet and their songs, what the war had been about. What they basically were creating was the Independence Day of a second American Revolution. That story got lost, it got lost for more than a century. And when I discovered it, I started calling people in Charleston that I knew in archives and libraries, including the Avery Institute, the black research center in Charleston–”Has anybody, have you ever heard of this story?” And no one had ever heard it. It showed the power of the Lost Cause in the wake of the war to erase a story. But I started looking for other sources, and lo and behold there were lots of sources. Harper’s Weekly even had a drawing of the cemetery in an 1867 issue. The old oval of that racetrack is still there today. If you ever go to Charleston go up to Hampton Park. Hampton Park is today what the racecourse was then. It’s named for Wade Hampton, the white supremacist, redeemer, and governor of South Carolina at the end of Reconstruction and a Confederate General during the Civil War. And that park sits immediately adjacent to the Citadel, the Military Academy of Charleston. On any given day you can see at any given time about 100 or 200 Citadel cadets jogging on the track of the old racecourse. There is no marker, there’s no memento, there’s only a little bit of a memory. Although a few years ago a friend of mine in Charleston organized a mock ceremony where we re-enacted that event, including the children’s choir, and they made me dress up in a top hat and a funny old nineteenth century suit and made me get up on a podium and make a stupid speech. But there is an effort, at least today, to declare Hampton Park a National Historic Landmark.

Buffalo Black Soldiers:

HIS MAJESTY HERSELF: A Play - Eventbrite

I guess it's inevitable that, for people like me who have been pushing for artistic expressions about one of our great lady Per-os,  Hathshepsut,  of ancient KMT, that when it happens, there's bound to be "artistic license' or mis-information in the package as well.

So here it is, for better or worse, the DC Black Theater's presentation of a play,
"His Majesty, Her Self" opening next month. Some of the questionable hype for this production is the claim that she dressed as a man, when in fact, there are ancient depictions of her without the royal false beard or the crown, which was the regalia reserved for the rulers of KMT.  We know that there were at least 4 other royal ladies who ruled KMT, and that Hatshepsut was NOT the first OR only one.  Whether the other ladies wore the royal regalia in official sittings for statuary is not known, but the probability that they also dressed in regalia for such sittings can not be discounted.  Among other questionable claims is that she STOLE the crown from Thutmosis III.  Our understanding is that he was a minor and could not rule yet, as has happened to other royal personnages in KMT.

But, the most troubling of the claims is that Hatshepsut's royal mummy has been located in 2007.  Many Afrikan Kemetologists, including Professor Manu Ampim, have serious reservations about the accuracy of this claim. He maintains that many claims made by the Arabs who run the Egyptian  excavations in KMT have proven to be baseless.  Even Dr. Hawass, the Arab head of the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities has doubts.  He said on his web site in 2007, "I do not believe this mummy is Hatshepsut. She has a very large, fat body with huge pendulous breasts, and the position of her arm is not convincing evidence of royalty."  Royal mummies arms are typically placed with the right arm over the left arm indicating transformation/resurrection.

Such fabrications of history are part of the process, I assume, for us to at least get  exposure of our history to the masses.

Judge for your self, and let me know your impressions.

India diplomacy Africa: India courts Africa, long wooed by Chinese.

Hold on there Mama Afrika, history has shown that you have much more to lose than to gain in these 'partnerships' with foreign countries.  Walter Rodney has already shown in his book, "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" that Europe deliberately neglected Afrikan infrastructure improvements and exploited Afrika.  Have we forgotten that China is arming the Sudanese regime in its genocide against its own people?  Have we forgotten that India's Dalits or "Undesirables" of Afrikan descent occupy the lowest rung of Indian culture and are racially discriminated against today by the Indians?  Have we forgotten that when Ghandi was living in South Afrika, he was an enemy of Afrikan liberation against the Dutch-led apartheid regimes that devastated  South Afrika?  And that, today, Indians living in Afrika, are perceived by many Afrikans as "a part of the problem"?

The Honorable Huey P. Newton, and others, have taught us that when we make alliances with others, we must ensure that the alliance is one between equals.  If Afrika fails to remember this history, it will find that the alliances will tend to serve the interests of the the exploiters more than the interests of the exploited.

360 Degrees of the Black Experience

A message to all members of Living In Black

I have completed 8 "Cycles of Seven", those phases of our life which are in rhythm with a natural order.  I have been noticing some pretty miraculous events happening in my world as of recent and I just realized today that I have already entered this 9th Cycle.  I am proud to say that I have ascended to my throne.

From this position I have been afforded a certain measure of authority that is awesome and appreciated.  I will do my best to explain over the coming weeks what this means from this perspective.  Meanwhile, join us today May 19th as we commemorate the birth anniversary of Malcolm X with some great programming, beginning at 8 AM PST, 11 AM EST with a conversation on education with Dr. Eva Holmes, aka Yaa Asantewaa II.  You don't want to miss this dynamic conversation on www.LIBRadio.com.

Also, remember to support our May Fund Drive.  We are winners and we need to replicate our successes, thus we know what to do with the "agreement" (money).

The New Wellness Revolution Vol 7: What You Must Know About Health Insurance - The author Pilzer, a trained economist, examines in detail the evolution of health insurance in the U.S. and thus shows how it has evolved into a beast which, by nature, causes more harm in the health care delivery system, than good. Learn about the three functions of health insurance and why you should discard two of them and do this for yourself, whether you are an employer or consumer, and save thousands of dollars a year. Do We Really Know Ourselves? - This dialog address the lack of self confidence, ability to focus on task and general weakness of our people these days. Whether it is physical endurance related to some underlying health condition, to a failure to act decisively when needed, too often we expect ourselves to come up short. We come to conclude that the number one problem we have to deal with is indecisiveness and the only evidence of correct decision making is immediate and deliberate action as habitual behavior. A College Degree, 55 Years in the Making - NYTimes.com

The moral of this story is "It's never too late to go back to school!" Even with the understanding that euro-controlled schools "train" you more than they "educate" you, still the statistics show that, on average, you are better off with those "credentials" than without them.

I encourage everyone who can, to go back to school!  And if possible, major in a technical field, physics, math, engineering, medicine, computer science.  And don't think for a moment that you can't handle the "hard sciences".  If you have Black blood in your veins, you have inherited the technical mastery  from your ancestors who built pyramids over 5,000 years ago, who wrote the world's oldest mathematical papers known as the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus from ancient KMT (Egypt) over 3,700 years ago, as well as the oldest medical papers-the Ebers Medical papyrus- over 3,600 years ago!

All of this was done by your Black ancestors thousands of years BEFORE Europe existed!  As Dr. Clarke used to say, "before the euro wore a shoe or had a house with windows."

YOU GO SISTAH & BRUTHA!

Hail to the Chief ! (For Brother George)

To: Brother George
From: Dan Tres Omi

Omi's Note:

As a youngblood, I vowed never to go to a funeral or a wake. I thought that with Brother George's passing, I would break that rule then I thought about it again. Heading down south to his service would have forced me to cancel several engagements that were planned. Some of these engagements involved children in our community. I think that Brother George would have stood up and fussed about me doing that. So I decided to do what I do best, and write...

Brother George would correct us if we introduced him as Mr. George. That was how he was. In his store, “The Self Improvement and Education Center” on 35th and Newport Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia, he was the mayor. He treated everyone that came through those doors as family. Although the sign read that he closed at 7pm, one could walk in at 7:32 pm and Brother George would act as if he just opened. He was always behind that counter ready to help. His store was always open for late night building sessions.

So many people walked through those doors. While there, I got to meet the greatest and the brightest of people involved in the upliftment of our community. There was always a lively debate going on. Brother George stood watch to make sure none of us got out of line. If we did, he would immediately throw us out. What I love most about Brother George was that he listened to all, however he would not stand for anyone disrespecting or threatening anyone, so all ideas and opinions were allowed. One did not have to be afraid to speak his or her mind. Brother George also disliked rumors. If someone was talking about someone else in the community, he would kindly ask that person to stop and remind that person that the other was not there to defend himself. Brother George was fair and impartial.

Looking back, the only thing Brother George did that was a definite no no was to talk about Louis Farrakhan. “Brother Danny, don't go there, Brother. Don't talk about the minister.”

“My store is always open to the community,” he would say, “people and organizations will come and go, but my store will be here.” And I believed him.

Brother George let me run two study groups, one book club, and several meetings at his store. He was accommodating and helpful. His customer service was impeccable. When he received a shipment of Supreme Bean Pie's, he would call me up and save some pies for me.

It was not until his passing that I realized that I have known Brother George since 1996. He has seen me go from a young hot head arm chair revolutionary to a married community man with several children. When I needed advice, he was always there to give. If I just needed someone to listen to me rant, Brother George was that person. I valued his advice and he never steered me wrong. If he had an issue with something I said, he would softly and patiently point it out. A good portion of my ideological evolution came through speaking with Brother George.

Brother George was old school. In being old school, he was very private. I learned through others or in personal conversations with him that he was retired military and a retired long shore man. His wife traveled the world to help folks in countries on the periphery. He enjoyed telling me stories of his wife's travels. Speaking with his relatives, one would see that Brother George the giant was also a loving family man. There were times I would catch his wife scolding him like any wife would. I used to laugh at this since I could never picture him doing that. I realized that Brother George was like any man who has been married a long time: we are led by our noses by our wives.

Brother George doted over my children as if they were his own grandchildren. He often commended me for being a husband and a father. When I had issues he encouraged me to work them out with my wife.

“Brother Danny, you know what you need to do,” he would say patiently.

The most funniest memory I have of Brother George is when Brother Jay and Brother Fanon of ODU put together a play called “The Trial of Christopher Columbus.” I was slated to play Columbus' defense lawyer. Brother George who was the dutiful store proprietor was asked to be in the play. He refused but he allowed Jay and Fanon to video tape his scene in his store! Brother George came to the play and sat in the front. We cheered and could not believe he was outside of his store. He watched his scene and quietly walked out.

“I have to man that store.”

No one believes me when I tell that story.

Upon learning of his passing, I realized that I had no pictures of Brother George. I learned that only two of my children remember him. It made me see that as much as Brother George as someone who was there for me, I was not always there for him. I see that as much as I saw him as that older uncle, I was a horrible nephew. While I am proud to say that I am one of the few who knew his family, I didn't know much about Brother George's personal life. I asked so much from him but never took the time to learn about him or see if I needed to give.

I love Brother George and always will. His memory will only bring laughter to our home. He will be missed. I can safely say that they don't build them like Brother George. Although I have known him for close to 15 years, I still find it difficult to say Brother George instead of Mr. George.

I think this is the only time you will hear me say, Hail to the Chief!

Split From the African Centered Movement ?

360 Degrees of the Black Experience

A message to all members of Living In Black

I'll be conducting an interview soon with Linda Stout, author of a new book: Collective Visioning: How Groups Can Work Together for a Just and Sustainable Future.  I am particularly struck by the following quote from the book liner:

"Many progressive and liberal Americans have been mired in disabling hopelessness for the last decade, with only brief surges of hope, such as the youth mobilization during the Obama presidential campaign.  Many of us have developed bad habits of focusing only on what we're against, instead of what we're for.  But change won't come without a vision of the better society we want."

I think that this statement is very applicable to our African Centered movement, with only slight alteration.  I am increasingly turned off by endless rhetoric, "buckets and buckets of words", that are confusing many of our young people and have our movement terribly stagnant since the passing of Dr.'s John Henrick Clarke and Amos Wilson in the late '90s.  I think that we need to raise the possibility that we may actually be in need of a revolt within the culturally conscious movement.  I would be a leader of the "Action Faction", deliberately separating our group from those who spend most of their time in useless rhetoric and glory-boasting over the accomplishments of previous generations while our own generation is plummeting towards disaster.

I will address this topic this morning, Friday May 13th on www.LIBRadio.com and www.LivingInBlack.com at 11 AM EST / 8 AM PST and lay out my argument that we need to engage within our own collective a debate on the value of continued lectures, panel discussions, YouTube videos, prayer and study groups in contrast to building gardens, healing centers, rites of passage programs, buying land and restoring such crafts as: art, music, construction, handcrafts, food services, security and other areas where we have distinguished ourselves in past generations.  Please join this conversation or pick up the program later if you missed it.  There are some who definitely disagree with me over the value of these lectures and prayer groups.  I welcome opposing perspectives as a valuable part of seeking resolution.

In the end, we are in dire need of Reparations, and the best agents to accomplish this are within our own ethnicity.  How can we get to that destination in the shortest period of time is the ultimate question.

Please, if you have not already, invest a few dollars in our semi-annual May Fund Drive.  We are doing great things (like installing an orchard next week at the Black Oaks Center for Sustainable and Renewable Living) and are planning on even greater things in the next three months, all toward the aim of Kujichagulia Village construction on a vast scale.  Please join us by planting seeds today that we can harvest in the next season.  Here is a link to make a donation of any amount which you choose: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=K3G9QWRMNTDMW

If you would prefer that your donation go directly to the Black Oaks Center LIB Partnership to pay for the orchard and my trip to install it and build an amphitheater on the property, please use the following special donation link: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=XH4HA852FWBVU

New LIBRadio Archives we would like you to consider:

DEAL OF THE DAY - Building, Action and Movement Collection on MP3 - I gathered together a special set of audios from our collection of 3000 digital archives that focus on these three themes because I am concerned that we need to split our movement off, away from redundant rhetoric and "glory praising" and concentrate more on tangible actions, functional organizing and centrally-directed collective investment. This collection contains over 50 hours of MP3 files, all selected because they help us distinguish non-productive rhetoric from true Pan African and progressive action. $40.00 on MP3 (LIBCD2794)

Baba Fred Carter: Investing in the Future NOW! / Tammy Hines: WAWA Development - These two programs center around sustainable living projects that are actually building up areas where our re-integration into shepherding Nature is taking place. In the first, we raise funds to install a fruit orchard at the Black Oaks Center for Sustainable and Renewable Living 40 acres in rural Illinois. Next up, one of our members shares conversation about the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance, which is recovering 26 acres of land in the city, toward the aim of training our people to get into the dirt and make a change in the larger environment by rebuilding an urban park. What do these moves reveal that could be useful for our own development?
