EDITOR'S NOTE: The following except from pages 47-50 of Overturning the Culture of Violence, written by Penny Hess, Chairwoman of the African People's Solidarity Committee and printed by Burning Spear Publications, debunks the cynical and anti-black argument that "Africans enslaved themselves." This argument points to the presence of Africans who collaborated with the European slave masters and "sold" Africans to them in order to shift the responsibility for the slave trade off the shoulders of the European colonial slavemaster and onto the backs of the colonized and enslaved African.
Today, as the voice of the enslaved African community asserts itself in the world and lifts up the demand for reparations, the blame-shifting "African collaborator" argument can be seen gaining traction in universities and bourgeois historical publications, not as an historical argument but as a political defense against the legitimacy of the reparations demand. As an organization of white people working under the leadership of the African People's Socialist Party to organize white people in solidarity with the African struggle for liberation and reparations, we in the Uhuru Solidarity Movement find it timely to publish this excerpt here:
HUMAN BONDAGE: Page 47-50,Overturning the Culture of Violence
The terrible impact that slavery has had on the continent of Africa cannot be calculated: the destruction of magnificent civilizations, the break-up of family and kinship circles, the massive depopulation, forced impoverishment, famine and starvation, the ravishing of an environment which had been so conducive to human civilization for millennia. From open, educated, prosperous and democratic societies, African people now lived in sheer terror, never knowing when their village or town would be raided for human loot by these white invaders.
Some North American people cynically place the blame for the enslavement of African people on the shoulders of African collaborators who participated in the kidnapping of their own people. Impacted by the social destruction wreaked by invading Europeans, a tiny minority of the conquered people did find their own survival by participating in this treachery.
The setting up of collaborators among the colonized population has been a successful tool of domination in every instance of European colonialism around the world. Africa is no exception. Europeans attack societies in Africa, Asia, or the Americas, destroying their traditional economies and long-standing social relationships. A unilateral colonial economy, which starves the people and creates the dependency on the colonial power, is militarily enforced.
The European invader gets richer and richer through his bloodsucking relationship, and offers resources, guns and special status to a minority sector of the oppressed population. The selected "elite" or the colony can themselves become enslaved or carry out the will of white power. If they take any stand independent of the colonizer as have, say, Panama's Noriega or Iraq's Saddam Hussein in today's world, white power spares them none of its wrath.
This plan has worked well over the centuries. A few people in every colony have participated in the devious imperialist schemes of slavery, genocide, torture and exploitation of their own people, a collaboration which benefits no one more than the European or North American "mother" country.
The statement that "Africans enslaved their own people" separates out African people from other colonial subjects, all of whom have had their share of betrayal among their ranks. It is a statement of imperialism's historic need to mobilize public opinion against African people.
Like the general white attitude toward the government-imposed drugs and dependent drug economy in today's African communities, this statement lets the parasitic colonial economic system off the hook. It is an anti-black expression of unity with the oppression of African people, saying, "They did it to themselves." Meanwhile all white people everywhere still benefit from the parasitic economic system which has as its foundation the enslavement and continued exploitation of African people.
Most Africans resisted enslavement with all of their energy. Rebellions on slave ships were common. According to one source, "Many deaths on slave journeys across the Atlantic derived from violence, brawls, and above all, rebellions. There was probably at least one insurrection every eight to ten journeys."
For example, Africans successfully rebelled in 1532 aboard the Portueguese slave ship the Misericordia. The 109 Africans on board "rose and murdered all the crew except for the pilot and two seaman. Those survivors escaped in a longboat. But the Misericordia was never heard of again."
Slave ship owners often three Africans off the ships just to collect the insurance money. One famous case was that of a ship owned by William Gregson and George Case (both former mayors of Liverpool, England). The captain threw 133 Africans into the sea because if Africans were to die naturally, the owners would lose money, but if the African people were "thrown alive into the sea," supposedly for the safety of the crew, "it would be the loss of the underwriters."
So many African people died en route that it has been said that sharks followed slave ships all the way from Africa to the Americas.
Africans who survived the notoriously brutal middle passage, as the Atlantic crossing was known, reached the Americas barely alive. If they were too ill, they were left to die on the shore. They were sold like animals on public auction blocks, naked or in rags, weakened and emaciated, having survived the months below deck with disease and malnutrition, not to mention the emotional ravage sof such an experience. Many Africans committed suicide to avoid enslavement, a practice otherwise unknown in African culture.
White buyers came to the market for slaves, "feeling the Africans' limbs and bodies much as butchers handled calves. The slaves were often asked, as they had been told to do before leaving Africa, to show their tongues and teeth, or to stretch their arms."
In the Americas, Africans were "broken in" by submitting them to inhuman terror in an attempt to crush out any resistance. The "breaking" process was psychological as well as physical, and included being forced to learn a version of a European language and to take a European name, something many Africans militantly resisted.
Under the domination of their white slave masters, African people of all ages were branded, women on the breasts. Africans were whipped until they were deeply scarred, and their ears or ear lobes were cut off. People were slashed in the face, and their hands and feet were cut off to prevent them from running away. Men were castrated; women were raped. Women's babies were cut out of their bellies for "punishment" and any man, woman or child could be forced to wear iron collars on their necks for life.
Under such brutal conditions, normal human relationships between men and woman or parents and children were interrupted and nearly impossible. Mothers were forced to work the full nine months of pregnancy, often giving birth in the field. They were then forced to abandon their children, as they had to keep on working or nurse the children of the slave master.

One Million Black Voters and supporters & Your Opportunities Are Bigger Than Your Oppression

Join One Million Black Voters for FREE and FREEdom !

This movement is simply called, "One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors" (OMCBV&C).

We are calling for (minimally) one million Race-conscious Black voters to join forces with us, and as our One Million continue to hear and heed our call-to-arms, the abundance of talent, skills, and expertise to be found among you will readily become evident, and each of you will begin to find or make your place in our ranks, and take on assignments critical to our eventual success.
What is a "Conscious Black Voter?" The One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors Movement refers to Black individuals who are fully aware that our race needs the best-and-brightest we produce to place the interests of our people collectively in "first-position." In doing so, we put into practice what all other racial and ethnic groups do routinely and automatically.

By calling the best and brightest among us to join forces and pool resources to build the capacity of our race to advance and protect its collective interests, the One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors campaign seeks to have black people do what other groups have done and do every day: Lift ourselves out of our lowly condition by our own collective efforts! A conscious Black voter would do this by voting as part of a solid block of Black voters determined to influence public policy decisions so that they favor rather than hurt black people, and open pathways to a better future for our children.

Correspondingly, a conscious Black contributor would readily pool his/her financial and other resources and resourcefulness to provide the wherewithal to underwrite the costs of projects and programs designed and intended to serve the needs and interests of our people.

To the skeptics out there who think Black folks are too individualistic to come together in such a large number, that one million Black folks will not cooperate, that we have too many schisms among us, and we will not trust one another, we say, "Not so."

To the doubters who continue to have faith in Democratic AND Republican platforms, which have ignored our needs, collaborated against our best interests, and engaged in flawed analyses of problems and the solutions thereof, we say, "not so fast."

We submit to you that even within the most reactionary, non-revolutionary Black person there is at least a REMNANT of a DESIRE to love Black people; and it is that residue of unrequited love that we are appealing to. Our assertion is that there are at least 1 million Black folks actively seeking for ways, means and reasons for us to come together to take corrective ACTION.

We invite you to become One of the Million Conscious Black Voters and help us break the ties that bind our people to dependency, self-negation, and the lowest rung on the political, social and economic ladder of American society.
Be "One of the Million" and let's finally let our people and everyone else know that we are very serious about being economically and politically empowered.

Message to Our African-American Young Adults – Your Opportunities Are Bigger Than Your Oppression

Young black couple in love leaning head against each other
To my younger brothas and sistas out there, if you want to make black lives matter and make a difference and betterment of yourself more than what the sorry worthless elder black generation has done and left nothing for you to build upon, then you need to think different and approach the challenges differently. Overall, in the 21st century, your opportunities are greater than your oppression and somehow you young African-Americans been distracted to focus more on your oppression than take advantage of your opportunities. If you are not focusing on your opportunities, then you are self-oppressing yourself.
You have to learn STEM and that is not a generic statement and let me be very specific with your ass. You have to learn how to create your own media instead of wonder why the bigoted mainstream media don't cover African-Americans. But you have to do it in a way that you compete for the same audience as mainstream media and don't try to make it some "black media" crap. Don't ever do a damn thing in your life as a black-orientated operation, you focus on making whatever you do global and mainstream and take over the world because the world is yours.
You have to learn technology and how to build. This means you need to learn how to manage data science and data analytics. The number one thing you cats are lacking where you getting your butt kicks is you do not have proper data sets to build intelligence and decision making upon. You have to read up on how to create and manage databases and data sets. Then you have to learn how to build service structures to perform tasks and also create business enterprise systems using open source software from call centers to peer-to-peer payments to manufacturing.
But here is the secret and this is what you young African-American adults need to do. You need to learn how to fail fast and get rejected fast. Failing fast means try something and know instantly that ish ain't going to work and you better try something new the next day. You still see old ass African-Americans talking ish about reparations and pooling our money together not realizing those are failure models but they still run their mouth about that crap. You instead better recognize a failure model and focus on another way to accomplish something real fast after failure to move towards a success model.
In addition, you have to learn how to get rejected fast. That means knowing quickly that Venture Capital firms in Silicon Valley do not want to invest in inner city technology firms ran by black people and will reject you – don't sit around trying to pander to bigots who don't like you. Learn quickly that mainstream media and local news are not friends of black people and only show African-Americans in a negative light. Learn very quickly that certain groups of people don't like you and don't sit around trying to get them to like you – find out immediately where people stand when it comes to liking/disliking you. Fast rejection is also a strategy in dating and relationships, don't sit around thinking someone like your ass the same way you like them, approach them and look for a fast rejection or fast acceptance so you can keep it moving.
Once you learn how to fail and get better, learn to quickly know who rejecting you and who accepting you and you get the skills up, then you African-American adult youth will be poised to take advantages of the opportunities around you and there are huge and big opportunities. We are talking about urban transformation in your hoods that you can repurpose into a world-class city and that is your spot. We are talking about working with other emerging economies worldwide like China building megacities and South Africa economic modernization and middle class growth and being advisors and consultants to bring urban culture to these areas. We are talking about financial technology solutions to build up capital and resources such as homegrown mobile payments as well as crowdfunding. And we are talking about manufacturing everything from shoes to electric vehicles. And infrastructures such as building think-tank collectives and technology clusters right in our own communities.
The opportunities are greater than your oppression and stop focusing on the negative things that will go away the minute you take advantage of your opportunities. This Dream and Hustle blog – cats out there are desperate to keep you away from reading this blog and the solutions we got. You will see more black self-important clowns more desperate for you not to know about this blog. I don't write anything in this blog for popularity or for any of you guys to admire me, I write this damn blog to help you see solutions and see they can be implemented. And it's time for you to stop having other people tell you to focus on oppression and negativity and change your ways and approach to focus instead of the opportunities and that is what me and my crew is here for. We have the information here at Dream and Hustle and I have my hand extended out to you to help bring you up in this world – please step up and rise up.

Pope's visit and People of African descent ?

What does the Pope's visit mean to People of African descent?
WHAT DOES THE POPES FRANCIS VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES MEAN TO PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT?                   O9-26-2015
By Shaka Barak, Minister of Education of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA & ACL)
What does Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio) the 79 year old, who is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church, a title he holds ex officio as Bishop of Rome, and Sovereign of the Vatican City, mean to Africans and people of African descent? He is a European, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936, who from the 22-27th  of September 2015, will have his historic visit to the United States. Highlights of his itinerary includes, White House address and meeting with President Barack Obama, address to a joint session of Congress, address to the United Nations General Assembly, a Madison Square Garden's Mass, a Visit to Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, and finally departing for Rome on Sunday.
It is said that Francis' papacy is expected to be a tremendous boon to Latino Catholics in South America and the Caribbean, who make up 39 percent of the global Catholic population of an estimated 1.2 billion Roman Catholics. We of African descent in those regions are the largest minority in many Latin-American countries yet the most vulnerable group, and must ask, what does his visit mean to us?. So while it is clear how Hispanics will benefit, we are concerned with how, using the words of Jesus Garcia, the former Afro Latin journalist, do we during this boom, address the issues we face such as "the great limitations which harass our communities of African origin, and the possibilities of breaking those barriers of poverty, racism and discrimination."
Catholics are the biggest religious group in most parts of Latin America. In Argentina, Francis' homeland, nearly 77 percent (31 million) of the population is Catholic, according to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. The nation has the world's 11th largest Catholic population. However, who will raise the cry that in Argentina Blacks are being erased from existence to the extent that the Afro-Argentinians are an endangered species.
We Garveyites of the UNIA & ACL support groups like the Organization of Africans in the Americas. We applaud and echo their call, of "We are people of African descent from various countries in the Western Hemisphere. Our purpose is to form links among the African peoples of the West: to get to know each other, to share our concerns and experiences, and we hope, to collectively fight the problems of racism and marginalization which afflict us no matter where we reside." Therefore, while most leaders are silent, indifferent or in awe of the Pope, it is for the Garveyites to raise our fight today with people like the Pope, to show our dissatisfaction, and  to let the world know that we do not desire to commit racial suicide and that we will and must assure recognition for our African past, present and future everywhere in the world.
After emancipation of the formerly enslaved Africans, the Spanish began their race mixing movement" that was an idea of the elite, to "wipe out" any trace of Africanism by making the nation lighter. There were similar attempts by miscegenation groups in the United States like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the "Brown Bag" societies. Under the cloak of integration they promoted the idea of "if you are white you are all right, if you are yellow you are mellow, if you are brown, stick around, and if you are black, get back". There were well organized plans to occupy all the land owned by nearly 900,000 Black farmers, until today African Americans have only a few thousand farmers and are almost landless.
In Latin America where Africans were on land that is rich in different species of animals, insects and rich in mineral deposits namely oil, then paramilitary groups wanted to eliminate Blacks through ethnocide. According to Melissa M. Valle, who has worked to develop forums for the analysis of the social reality of African-descended people from Latin America, "This racial order closely maps on to the existing class order resulting in significant social, economic, political, criminal justice, and health disparities based upon race within the Latin@ populations throughout the Americas. While race is neither a fixed nor a biological fact, racism, oppression, discrimination, and the disparities based upon racial identification are very much social facts that exact a high price on people's lives."
We Garveyites likewise,  remember the "Parsley Massacre"; also referred to as El Corte by Dominicans and as Kout kouto a by Haitians; that was government-sponsored genocide in October 1937, at the direct order of Dominican president Rafael Trujillo who ordered the execution of the Haitian population living in the borderlands with Haiti. Estimates of the total number of deaths from a low of 547 to a high of 20,000".  Another tragedy was when the female Senator, Cordoba,  the only Black senator in Colombia was kidnapped by three truckloads of guerillas on 5/25/99. Where was the Church, and where was the then Arch Bishopl at that time?
At the Pope's visit  to the United Nations he mentions conflicts in the Middle East, Europe and the tragedy of the plane bombing that brought down the World Trade Center in New York, but he did not mention the suffering of Afro Latino's living in his back yard. What has the Pope Francis ever done to encourage the bridging of the gap in services to the marginalized Black communities in Latin America, before he became Pope? How does he plan to encourage Latino leadership to give Afro-Latin Americans visibility and help to improve education, poverty alleviation and microenterprises for them? The Pope silence instead means his voice join those who deny race, and that Blacks are part of the "disadvantaged racial minority group where he's from?
From first-hand experience the Pope knows that often Blacks are excluded from international forums in Latin-America. Where is the Pope on the United Nations call for the International Decade for People of African Descent? In Latin America, there are 19 of the 219 cardinals that are from that region, and although Africans are the largest minority there it's far too few Afro Latino Cardinals there. Where is the Popes call for leadership training programs that could build self-esteem, create employment, and increase income for Afro Latinos? Where is the Pope when there are attempts to whiten Africans, shift color categories, and destroy slave records?
The Latin American governments and the Catholic Church are afraid of the news of how severely Blacks are treated will get out to African Americans and the African nations. African-Americans however, are quite interested in developing a relationship with our natural allies in Latin-America in the areas of trade/commerce, policy, diplomacy, and international development to benefit Blacks in both the United States, Latin-America, the Caribbean and Africa, and Asia, and Indonesia. African Americans have listened to the voice of those who have protested against the injustice against Afro Latinos for decades. If the Pope is to have some relevance to Africans we must ask what will the Pope do to help, or is he in opposition similarly to that which comes from countries like Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile and Argentina with  millions of  Blacks, that in the past have been uncomfortable with facilitating pan African relationships let alone with dealing with ethnic issues concerning Blacks?
Where is the Pope when it comes to the CRIMES AGAINST African Humanity? During his visit to South America in July,2015, he apologized for the sins, offenses and crimes committed by the church against indigenous peoples by these conquistadors like Columbus, however he didn't mention the crimes against Africans. Many Native Americans are not happy with the event on Wednesday, when Junipero Serra was canonized. He is known for helping to introduce Christianity to much of California as he marched north with Spanish conquistadors, establishing nine of the state's 21 missions. Research shows also that likewise, "Christopher Columbus under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. Those voyages, and his efforts to establish permanent settlements on the island of Hispaniola, initiated the Spanish colonization of the New World". Where is the Pope on Christopher Columbus, since he was a Catholic and who is now being seen as a mass murderer, and as the one who set in motion the enslavement of Africans and what would become genocide of Native American tribes. Hero or murderer, Pope?
Valentin Lopez, chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, said Tuesday. "This has woken up the outrage of indigenous people around the world." In California, at the historic Carmel mission where Serra died, and where his mission was founded in 1771, also was preparing for a silent protest by members of the Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation, who intended to pray for ancestors buried in the mission's cemetery. Will this visit also awaken outrage or at least questions among people of African descent?
The two nations that have the world's biggest Catholic populations, outside of the U.S. are  133 million in Brazil and 96 million in Mexico. In Brazil with a population of 202,656,788 61%-63% are Catholic and 57 million Africans live there. Some well-known Brazilians persons from there include Abadias Do Nascimento, Anderson Silva, Pele, Sergio Penas, and Clarrissa  Dos Santos. In Mexico 124,664,000 and 81% are Catholic and 200,000 African descendants live there. In Mexico most of the roads, bridges, and Cathedrals were built by Blacks. Blacks fought for Mexico's independence and Mexico's second President, Vicente Guerrero was of African descent. Africans although illtreated today, have fought and died in for the liberation and independence of most Latin American countries and later served in the highest offices of those governments.
In Colombia with a population of 47,551,232 and 75% are catholic and 15 million Africans live there under oppression. In Cuba with a population of 11,200,000, and 51.7% are Catholic and 4 million Africans live there under oppression. In Dominican Republic of 10,400,000 and 57% are Catholic and 5.4 million African descendants live there under a denial of their Africanism. In Venezuela 30,400,000 and 73% are Catholic. In Venezuela Blacks work in poorly paid agricultural or domestic jobs. In Ecuador 15,223,680 and 74.0% are Catholic. In Ecuador Blacks and the indigenous people are the poorest of the nation. Ecuador is the most racist country in Latin America. Ecuador tries to hide their blacks and limit their exposure. In Guatemala as elsewhere, enslaved Blacks intermarried with Native Americans. In Costa Rica most of the country is off limits to Blacks like a color bar. Countries with significant African, mulatto, or zambo populations today include Brazil (57 million, if including the pardo Brazilian population with Mulatto phenotype), Haiti (8.7 million), Dominican Republic (8.5 million), Cuba (7 million), Colombia (5 million) and Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has a population between 20%–46% of people of African heritage.  In Puerto Rico life for Blacks was a living hell during the colonial period. From day one of arrival in 1560 Afro-Puerto Ricans were seen as inhuman, strange exotic and suspicious. There Blacks were branded on their foreheads for the owner's identification and safe guard from kidnapping. Blackness was acknowledged but rarely in a positive light.
So what does the Pope's visit mean? It means if we look carefully, we can understand that with so many Africans and people of African descent in the African diaspora, we can see why the Jamaican, Caribbean born Honorable Marcus Garvey (b. August 17, 1887, d. June 10, 1940) established divisions and chapter of the UNIA & ACL in Latin America. We can also understand why the 3rd Assistant President General of the UNIA had the responsibility to organize those Africans there. The Pope's visit hopefully reminds us that African leadership must stay ever vigilant to inform our race about the things happening in the world that could impact our interest positively or negatively. His visit means that in the future there must be unity among the members of the African diaspora because All Black Lives Matter World-Wide, and nobody will protect us or speak out for us as well as we can protect ourselves and speak for ourselves.
We seek the meaning of the Pope's visit, not because we are opposed to Catholics, because the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a Catholic, although he confined his time to serving his race, and there are 176 million Africans on the continent of Africa that are Catholics. We raise this question because Catholics take their orders from the Pope and his representatives and many people in Latin America, that are killing people of African descent are Catholics. The Pope is called His Holiness and His Grace, and many members of our race respect him as we expect others to respect the fact that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey is called His Excellency in keeping with his being the founder and head of the International organization the UNIA & ACL, is the first National Hero of Jamaica, and is loved by millions around the world on every continent. Like Christ the Honorable Marcus Garvey was persecuted, shot , framed, arrested, indicted, tried, convicted, imprisoned, and deported. He wrote, "May we not say to ourselves that the doctrine Jesus taught-that of redeeming mankind-is the doctrine we ourselves must teach in the redemption of our struggling race? Let us therefore cling fast to the great ideal we have before us. This time it is not the ideal of redeeming the world, such as was the ideal of Jesus, but it is the ideal of redeeming and saving 400,000,000 souls who have suffered for centuries from the persecution of alien races." The next time a white Pope, Queen, King, Emperor, Imam or head of state visits our countries where we reside, or an African leader for that matter, rather than becoming teary eyed, or indifferent, let us ask the question, and do an analysis of  what does this visit mean to our people. This may be beneficial for those who may know or who may not have known that that leader even arrived let alone understands how this persons visit like the Pope's may have meaning to our race one way or another.

Why I Ain't Getting on the Bus for the MMM This Or Any Other Year

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

Getting on the bus to DC this October 10? BAR managing editor Bruce Dixon wishes you safe travels, but he ain't coming. "Justice or Else" is a meaningless slogan, he says, and MMM continues a century old tradition of black leadership dependent on an unprincipled pretense of "black unity" so empowered leaders can speak for us while we serve as their mute (unless commanded otherwisde) backdrop.

Blacks Cheer Venezuelan Leader – But Still Support Democrat Terror

by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

Carrying on a tradition begun by Fidel Castro in 1960, Venezuelan leader Maduro came to Harlem, this week, for the opening of the UN General Assembly. When he spoke of U.S. terror in the world, the crowd cheered. But will they break with a Democratic Party and president that, along with the Republicans, are "the birthmothers of al Qaida and the midwives of the Islamic State?" Sometimes, solidarity is even less than skin deep.

Freedom Rider: Putin Trumps Obama at the U.N.

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

With Libya, Iraq and Syria in flames, the president of Russia confronted the world's most dangerous man in the global hall of humanity. "I cannot help asking those who have caused the situation," said Vladimir Putin, "do you realize now what you've done?" Obama, the nation-slayer, sneered and mouthed exceptionalist absurdities – unmasked before the world.

The Bernie and Trump Trap: Beyond the Dead-End of Imperial Politics

by Danny Haiphong

"Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are here to rescue the system with a dose of fear and hope." Trump's open-air racism instills fear in racial minorities and people who consider themselves "liberal" or "progressive." Sanders gives them foolish hope that the Democratic Party can be changed from within. Grassroots movement politics is sidetracked, because "presidential elections are where movements go to die, as the anti-war movement exemplified directly after the election of Barack Obama."

Powerless Whites Want "In" On Chitlin' Politics

by Mark P. Fancher

Why not a Donald Trump run for the White House? With corporations firmly in control of U.S. society, presidents don't matter much. In recent decades, the job has been "eagerly accepted by: a Georgia peanut farmer; a politician known as "Slick Willie;" a retired actor who once co-starred with a chimp; a former CIA hack and oil man; his ne'er-do-well son; and most recently a black guy with a smooth rap."

My Name is Nobody: Religious Fanaticism is a Western Tradition

by Dr. T.P. Wilkinson

Europeans and white Americans like to believe that religious fanaticism is endemic to the non-white, non-Christian world, and that they are the guardians of secular civilization. In reality, the historical rise of the West is a saga of fanaticism. In modern times, it was President Jimmy Carter who "started the wave of fanatical reactionary Islam in Afghanistan – to crush a secular regime there and indirectly attack the Soviet Union."

American Capitalism: A Disaster With no "Moral Center"

by Cynthia McKinney

Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney see capitalism through different lenses. Reich thinks the system used to have a "moral center." McKinney says that's nonsense: "Business as usual in the United States IS the perpetuation of injustice."

Black Families and Women Bear Burden of Mass Incarceration

A survey of 1,000 former prison inmates and their families by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, in Oakland, California, "showed that it's mainly African American women who bear the brunt of a loved one's incarceration," said Darris Young, a local organizer for the center who is himself a former inmate. "When an individual is incarcerated, then the impacts on the family, which translate back into the community, are enormous," said Young. For example, "nearly one out of five families involved in our survey faced eviction – they were denied housing or did not even qualify for public housing once their formerly incarcerated family member returned."

October Rising: Mass Protest in NYC

"We are coming out of a year of police literally getting away with murder," said Carl Dix, co-founder of the Stop Mass Incarceration Network and an organizer of Rise Up October, a series of demonstrations set for October 22 through 24in New York City. "We've reached a crucial turning point, because the authorities have not only doubled down on releasing their police to brutalize and murder people, but they are trying to demonize the protest movement, talking about it being responsible for a non-existent war on cops." In reality, cop killings are at an historic low. "We have to meet that with redoubled resistance," said Dix.

U.S. Foments Chaos and Death in Syria

"From the beginning, the war in Syria has been about tearing down the government of Syria and creating a completely chaotic, destabilized state, which leaves Israel and the U.S. as the strong forces in the region," said Sara Flounders, of the United National Anti-War Coalition, UNAC. Washington pursues its goals by "sending in mercenaries" to fight alongside the Islamic State, "which was funded by Saudi Arabia and Turkey – both U.S. proxies in this war," said Flounders.

Washington Caused Flood of "Regime Change Refugees."

James Paul, former executive director of the Global Policy Forum and author of Syria Unmasked, said the U.S. has a long history of promoting jihadist warfare: "If we go back to Afghanistan, the U.S. pattern of supporting Islamic fundamentalist groups and movements is very consistent – it's almost the standard playbook," said Paul. "The biggest gift that the Europeans could give to the refugees in their countries is to look into ending these military interventions." Paul describes most of the current Middle Eastern and North African migrants as "regime change refugees."
