Virginia Beach Virginia Afr-Am Male Summit

The African-American Male Summit commemorates the high ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This summit is for male students who are in grades eight - twelve and their parents, and will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Green Run High School.
 
 
Throughout the day, students will attend a series of breakout sessions and hear from guest speakers to assist them in their journey towards productive citizenship and academic achievement. These sessions will focus on topics such as Preparing For And Achieving Great Test Scores, Improving Grades In Every Subject, Finding School-Based Support To Reach Academic Goals, and more. Students attending the summit can visit with college representatives and community leaders and will receive valuable support materials. Parents and guardians will also participate in separate breakout sessions and receive resources to help them guide their sons in navigating the challenges associated with the teen years.
 
The African-American Male Summit is designed to inspire our male students to thrive and achieve their goals for a lifetime. Please reserve a seat for your son(s) by completing the registration form above and returning it to your school's guidance office no later than December 16, 2011.
The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. and finish at 1:00 p.m., with registration check-in beginning at 8:00 a.m.
 
There is no cost to students or parents. Snacks, pizza and cake will be served.

Parents, guardians, and interested adults enjoyed the breakout sessions designed especially for them.   School Board member Todd Davidson led a panel comprising former School Board members in a discussion of issues confronting African American male youth. Students, parents, VBCPS teachers and administrators, and invited guests gathered in the Renaissance Academy gymnasium to hear the keynote address by Dr. Billy Cannady.   More than 375 students and 175 parents as well as guests, exhibitors, volunteers, and staff participated in the Fourth Annual African American Male Summit.
