Greetings Essence Members and Guests,   August's DVD Presentation will be What You Don't Know About Django: Unchain Your Mind by Anthony Browder. Historian Anthony Browder will deconstruct the movie which caused much discussion around the "N" word in 2012. Whether you have seen the movie or not, it will be a spirited and enlightened discussion indeed. We will review the DVD this Wednesday August 14, 2013 from 6:30-8pm in the Program Room in the Children's section at Indian River Public Library in Chesapeake, VA. Seating is limited for this discussion, so email RSVPs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJXnv8vypdw   http://hamptonroads.com/events/details/59599   In honor of National Cancer month, we will discuss Rebecca Skloot work, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks on Thursday September 5th, 2013 from 6:30-8pm.  Henrietta Lacks was a poor Southern African American who passed away from cervical cancer in 1951.  Her cells are still reproducing to this day and impact the world today.  Her cells have been instrumental in many of the cancer, immunization and medical drug treatments today.  The story is about her life and the journey of her cells taken without her consent and used for research by large companies all over the world.  This will be a very powerful read indeed.  Copies are available at Indian River Public Library.  Here are a few links to get you started:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vow1ePzuqo   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPZilSkbZHs     If you have any suggestions for November 2013, please send me a line.
