Community Pulse Reminder: Thursday, January 3, 5:30 - 7:30, Piccadilly Cafeteria, 530 N. Military Highway, Norfolk

Meet leaders of organizations featured in the January issue of Hampton Roads Gazeti

VIGILANT WATCH: When we have an emergency, we take for granted that first responders will be there to help. Yet, in their own times of need, first responders often have no one to call. Thanks largely to the efforts of two Virginia Beach master firefighters who founded Vigilant Watch, that's beginning to change. The organization provides "911 for our first responders." Above, Vigilant Watch volunteers begin constructing a wheelchair ramp for a first responder in need.

C.L.E.A.N. Rather than lashing out in anger when his young nephew was brutally murdered, Anthony Daniels founded an organization that mentors youth and works with parents, while reducing crime in Norfolk's Southside neighborhoods. Above, youth and leaders on a trip to the Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore.

Eggleston has been around a long time —since 1955 — providing employment for citizens with disabilities. It now operates 33 programs in 22 locations, providing services to more than 80 persons each year. Above, an Eggleston associate at work.

IN THE LIMELIGHT: Dick Biondo, Distinguished Toastmaster and longtime charity auctioneer, shares his views on community service and servants.

THE VILLAGE: Meet author Lowell G. Evans, whose novel was written to help people understand epilepsy.
