Parents are the coach of the household team

Virginia College Access Network-The Parent As Coach!
Parents are the coach of the household team, everyone else is an assistant coach.  I have been saying for years, it amazes me how much money our nation puts into innovative solutions to motivate kids academically and one focused parent can accomplish this goal for free. Parents have to develop the X's and O's for their families, which should include academic expectations and college-career readiness.  When this is supported in the household, students go to school everyday with a sense of family mission instead of asking themselves, "why am I going to school-for what reason am I here?" My wife's family has a 100% college graduation rate.  Yes, I did say 100%!  The reason why? Her great-great grandfather, a first generation free slave, made this a family mission and effectively communicated this purpose to his 8 children.  It has been snowballing generation after generation.  College graduation is looked at as a family expectation vs. a school one.

Take a look at this video link where College Access Professional in Virginia and I are discussing challenges and strategies parents face in helping students make the connection.  The event was the Virginia College Access Network Conference in Glen Allen, VA. We point out the primary solution--parents having high expectations centered around a family mission.

It is impossible to discuss college without discussing parental support.  I have made this message one of my top focuses for 2013.
