Nothing new about this "news", except it shows that we are not doing enough to move our kids away from the lure of the TV. The real danger in not doing so is that, as scholars such as Dr. Asa Hilliard pointed out, our kids typically watch 30-minute TV shows and as a result their attention span tends to work in 30-minute intervals. However, when they go to school, 30-minute attention spans cannot keep them focused all day and accordingly, they tend to become bored, inattentive, and subsequently become dropouts.
Now the euro has developed a tracking mechanism that alerts the policy makers to statistics that show how many kids that do not learn well in school at the earliest grade levels, and they can determine approximately how many of those elementary kids will become dropouts, unable to get and hold jobs, turn to crime and subsequently the euros forecast how many market-driven prisons they need to build to "house" these future delinquents. Thus, for instance, the Gov. of NY recently cut many millions from the state's education budget and rolled the funds into prison construction to meet FUTURE demand based on their projections of how many of our kids will lose interest in school and become candidates for the prison system.
The moral of this story? DON'T ALLOW THE TV OR VIDEO GAMES, IPODS, ETC. TO BABYSIT YOUR KIDS!
