HU School of Pharmacy to Host Wellness Fair

The Hampton University School of Pharmacy (HUSOP) is hosting a Health and Wellness Fair, in conjunction with the Script Your Future Campaign, at the West Hampton Community Center, 1638 Briarfield Rd., Oct. 29. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The goal of the interactive fair is to provide the public with tools and strategies to improve medication adherence. HUSOP students and faculty will be on hand to assist with questions about medications. Visitors can also bring their medications with them to get consultation on proper use.
Health screenings, including diabetic foot exams, blood pressure and blood glucose tests will also be available, as well as information about Medicare enrollment and living with hypertension and asthma. A total of 70 students from the HUSOP are involved in the fair with the hopes of servicing at least 500 people. The target audience are those 55 and up, though those as young a 18 are welcome to attend and receive information. The event's theme is "Adherence, one step to a better you. When you know better you do better."
"Medication adherence involves taking medications as prescribed. When people fail to take medications as instructed by healthcare providers including their doctors, nurses and pharmacists, they are considered to be non-adherent," said Gloria Adabie, a fourth year HU pharmacy student who is participating in the fair. "Medication non-adherence costs the U.S. healthcare system $290 billion annually in avoidable expenditures. By working to improve medication adherence, our aim is to not only save money but save lives. Nearly 125,000 people die every year from not taking medications as prescribed."
